  • Review initial workup that should occur in the family medicine setting. 

  • Review thresholds where referral to hematology is recommended 

Clotting Chronicles: Coagulation Pediatrics
8:50 - 9:10 AM - Presented by Dr. Anthony Chan

  • Identify and review the congenital and acquired risk factors for thrombosis in the pediatric population.
  • Review the current standards and emerging trends in the treatment of pediatric thrombosis, including anticoagulation therapy, role for thrombolysis and use of mechanical thrombectomy.
  • Examine evidence-based approaches for thromboprophylaxis in high-risk pediatric patients, including perioperative management and prolonged immobilization.

  • Describe the indications and appropriate use of different blood products in periprocedural hemostasis 
  • Review best practice guidelines for the utilization of blood components in various clinical settings

  • Discuss recent research findings and how they impact current treatment protocols.
  • Discuss the management of VTE in the context of common comorbidities and how they affect treatment choices and outcomes.
  • Review current guidelines and evidence regarding the duration of anticoagulation therapy in various clinical scenarios of VTE.

Navigating Hematologic Emergencies: A Focus on severe thrombocytopenia and anemia
10:45 - 11:05 AM - Presented by Dr. Cyrus Hsia

  • Review the acute management of severe thrombocytopenia, including immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) and the use of corticosteroids, IVIG, and emergency platelet transfusions. 
  • Discuss the role of splenectomy and newer therapeutic agents in refractory ITP cases.
  • Review the acute management of severe anemias, including hemolytic anemias such as autoimmune hemolytic anemia, microangiopathic hemolytic anemias, and hereditary anemias such as Sickle cell anemia.
